Last week, I was whining about how I was tired of my decorations above my kitchen cabinets. You can read about it here. So I focused on this area this week. My 6th anniversary was this weekend, making it busy. Even so, I managed to make (a little) progress.
I went shopping to see what I could find that was cheap and may possibly look okay. The area is only 10 inches tall, which limits items. I looked for items with at least some green. I also wanted cheap items. I found this sign at Hobby Lobby. It was on clearance which made it an even better deal.
I already had a cross that says "Hope" so I thought about doing 3 sections that said Faith, Hope, and Love. I wandered Hobby Lobby and found this chipboard sign for 50% off.
I modpodged some green paper on it. I won't go into detail as there are about 2 million "how tos" online about how to do this. If you want instructions from me, leave a comment below.
I then got out some white shimmery paper and my cricut. I used the George cartridge to cut some 1 inch flowers and hearts. I then glued them on.
Here is the final product. It has some bubbles around the a but I wasn't too worried since it is up high.
I then spray painted the little red bird to make him green. I didn't worry about the gem or anything-- just spray painted it all this fern color. My husband says he looks horrible because you aren't supposed to paint porcelain. I think I'm just not that great at spray painting. Oh well, he's up high.
I then set to work making the entire shelf look bee-you-tee-ful! I think it looks. . . better. Which is what I go for when decorating. I *may* make some other changes down the road. Since I just randomly put stuff up 3 years ago (when I moved in) and this is the first time I've redecorated, I wouldn't hold your breath.

A before and after look, just for you.
Wow! I love this! I use that area for storage haha! I think I may have to use that space in a new way--thanks for the idea :)
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of storage do you have? I haven't used it as storage for a couple of reasons.
Delete1) It's only 10 inches high and about 6 inches in depth.
2) I'm short-- I have to stand on a chair to even halfway reach it- a stepstool doesn't cut it.
I wish I could use it as storage. My kitchen is lacking storage space!
I love how your bird turned out and your cute sign at Hobby Lobby. Your space looks great!

Thanks for visiting! I love the butterflies.
DeleteThat looks wonderful! I need redo the area above my cupboards too, but I'm afraid of all the dust up there. :-/
ReplyDeleteOh there was definitely dust. Also grease-- I had to scrub everything down.
DeleteYour cabinet shelf looks lovely. I love butterflies, too~ Thank you for stopping by my blog. :)
ReplyDeleteI loved visiting your blog. Come visit here again!
DeleteI think the signs make it more personal-I like this look. Another thing crossed off your list! :)

Head Over Heels For Teaching
Thanks! Yes, the words Faith, Hope, and Love have personal meaning to me. They were used in my wedding ceremony (plus, I just like 1 Corinthians 13).
DeleteI am looking forward to owning a house soon. I went from paying a mortgage to paying rent about three years ago because I moved clear across the continent. Now, I'm ready to find the house that I'm meant to decorate! Your changes to your above-the-cabinet look great! I love the green! (By the way, you're better at spray painting than I am!)

Make Time for Glitter!
There are some problems with owning your own house (maintenance costs and the fact that you just can't call someone else to take care of and pay for problems) but it is nice to be able to make changes.
ReplyDeleteYou just *think* I'm better at spray-painting because you don't see the bird close up. That's my trick. Keep people far away from the created decorations.
I absolutely love your new area above the kitchen cabinets. I am still trying to understand ModPodge. I am still unsure of how people use it. I would rather paint and then spray it with a clear protective spray paint.

Stuck In The Middle
ModPodge is basically really watery glue. It works by just wetting the paper and making it stick down really well to whatever you are sticking it too. If you don't have paper you want to use, then spray paint is probably better.
DeleteThank you so much! However, when I went to Hobby Lobby on Saturday they had five different kinds of ModPodge. There was glitter, clear, glossy, etc. Why would glitter or glossy matter if you are using it as glue?
DeleteWell, it is a glue but then it also makes a hard coating on the paper. There are so many different kinds. I just used the "classic" matte kind.
DeleteDid you ever decoupage in school? That's what mod podge is.
DeleteI like the addition of the word faith.
ReplyDeleteNot very fancy in 1st
Thanks Deb!
DeleteIt's looking great! Aww the green bird :)

I know-- he looks so much better than he looked red.
DeleteI think you are having a ball, and that's what counts. I love when I redo an area, even a small area. My house is my constant project. See you around. Kathleen

I agree-- it is so fun when I redo an area of my house. It looks so fresh for awhile. . . then it looks okay. . . then it's time to redo again!
